News about Brothers, helping Brothers, carry the cross of Christ!
January 2012 Bi-Annual MARINER
Grand Knight Report
by: Ben Warner, III
I hope you, your families and friends had a Joyous Christmas celebrating the birth of our Savior and a Wonderful New Year that only gets better. Through the generosity of many, the Knights of Columbus St. Thomas More Southwest Council 3910 was blessed with a highly successful first half of the 2011-2012 fraternal year.
As Knights, we salute our pastor Fr. Bill Oliver, whose ongoing support and encouragement make our work possible. We thank our clergy, parishioners, community neighbors and corporate friends, such as Walmart, La Madeleine, Starbucks, Demeris Bar-B-Q, McDonald’s and Home Depot for helping us help others. There are others that assist the Knights in many ways. You are remembered and appreciated. Our gratitude goes out to all of you!
I congratulate my Brother Knights and their lovely ladies for a job well done. With the funds raised from events such as Fajitas, Spaghetti & Meatballs, Briskets, Chicken Tenders, Hamburgers & Hot Dogs, and Italian Sausage, we are making a big difference.
Going into 2012 our momentum is noteworthy, giving us reason to be excited! In January, we begin with a “Back by Popular Demand” Chicken Tenders Family Lunch. Our Smoked Briskets have been so successful that the Knights are introducing Smoked Chickens this February. During Lent on Fridays, we continue with our Archdiocesan People’s Choice Award for “Best Fried” and “Best Baked” catfish. On May 21st, the Knights are again sponsoring the His Hands of Hope Annual Charity Golf Tournament. These events and others underwrite our VA Hospital Ministry, Adoration and Knights of Columbus Jubilee Pancakes(third weekend in March: late Saturday evening, very early Sunday morning), Easter Egg Hunt, our STM Scholarships Program and much more.
Our successes are great, our 2012 plans are great, but the need continues to be great as well. There is plenty for the Knights at St. Thomas More to do. We must intensify our ability to serve our parish and beyond. Simply said, “More Knights can do more; a lot more Knights can do a lot more charitable work.”
Six months ago upon becoming your Grand Knight, I asked for your prayers that I might continue the leadership provided by our Past Grand Knights. Now, I petition you to again pray for the same, but also to pray that more men will join the Knights of Columbus. Knighthood brings you closer to your faith and allows you to help bring others closer to their faith. Brothers, share this blessing. Ask/sponsor at least one Catholic gentleman to join you, join us, and join NOW!
Bettering lives through service,
Ben Warner

A Sunday at St. Chappelle in Etienne France.
Greetings to all from across the pond. Winter has finally arrived; it’s a cold sleety, snowy Sunday here in Saint Étienne, France. A perfect day to stay indoors; catch up on some e-mail; and watch the Texans game live this evening (NFL.com’s Game Pass is a beautiful thing).
I went to mass this morning at Chapelle St. Bernard which is directly across the street from my apartment building (which was very appreciated on a day like today). The chapel is currently served by the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter founded in 1988 which is dedicated to formation, sanctification, and pastoral deployment of priests in the cadre of the traditional Roman Rite. This is fortunate for me because 1) I understand more of the mass because it is more Latin and less French, and 2) the new changes to our own Roman Missal in English make perfect sense after studying the Latin text.
The chapel itself was constructed in the 1890’s in the Romanesque style. There are several, beautiful stained glass windows adorning the walls and the apse. An expansive choir loft allows for incredible, non-amplified acoustics. The gilded bronze altar contains relics of Saint Barbara, who was especially revered in the local area as the patron saint of miners and engineers, professions the once flourished in this region.
Sadly though; the chapel was only about 1/3 full today, the Fourth Sunday of Advent in preparation for the birth of our Savior. The parishioners are a mixture of senior citizens and young families; but nearly absent of young adults. Besides a rosary said before each mass and a talented choir; there is no other lay participation in the church. Coming from the St. Thomas More tradition of stewardship; this is difficult for me to understand. I have tried reaching out in spite of the language barrier; but to date have only made friends with on one young couple, Claude & Claire, and Claude’s brother Carl. Claude & Carl spent time in high school and college in the US. Carl is in his apostolate assignment after attending the Seminary of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Denton, Nebraska He will be ordained in May as a Priest of the Fraternity of Saint Peter. Carl reminds a little of Father Christopher, an athletic young man with a real passion for serving his God and his Church. Alas, there is hope!
The Church in France has a proud tradition of missionary work throughout the world; including the difficult areas such as Southeast Asia and China in the 19thcentury. There were numerous priests, brothers, sisters and lay people who were martyred during that time. I ask that you keep the Church here in your prayers; that there will be more zealous young men like Carl who will answer the call; and the Church in France will not meet the same fate as the mining and engineering industries mentioned above.
Finally, I hope to see you all soon.
Faithfully yours,
Steve Shrout
